Glucosamine or glucosamine sulfate is a natural substance found in the body. It is present in the fluid that surrounds the joints. Glucosamine often comes from seafood shells.
Glucosamine was first identified in the year 1876, by Dr. Georg Ledderhose, however it was not fully defined until 1939 thanks to the work of Walter Norman Haworth.
There are different forms of glucosamine among which are: glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride and acetylated glucosamine. These different chemicals have some similarities, although they do not offer the same effects when ingested in the form of dietary supplements.
